Frequently asked questions
How do I get a good scan?
Printed lists work best. Lay the sheet flat in good light and keep the whole list in the picture.
After the scan, Yo Bro shows you what the camera read. Check it, and fix any word it got wrong in the editor before you start practising.
Can I import a list from a spreadsheet?
Yes. Save the list as a CSV file and choose Import a CSV in Yo Bro.
- The first line holds the two language codes, like
en,nl. - Every line after that has two columns: the word, and what it means.
- Columns can be separated by commas, semicolons or tabs.
en,nl
the weather,het weer
the cloud,de wolk
How do I share a list with a friend?
Open the list and choose Share as QR code. Your friend scans the code with Yo Bro and gets the whole list. The list travels inside the code itself, so no internet is needed.
How does a battle work?
All phones need to be on the same Wi-Fi. One phone hosts the battle from one of its lists and shows a QR code; the others scan it to join and pick an animal. Joining is always free.
Phones can’t find each other? Check that everyone is on the same Wi-Fi network and not on mobile data. On iPhone and iPad, Yo Bro needs permission to use the local network: you’ll find it in Settings, under Yo Bro. Some school and guest networks keep devices apart; if so, try another network, such as a phone’s personal hotspot.
I have a subscription. How do I get it back on another phone?
On the unlock screen (Unlock everything), tap Restore a purchase. Make sure you are signed in with the same Apple Account (formerly Apple ID) or Google account that took out the subscription: it belongs to that account.
How do I cancel the subscription?
Yo Bro Pro renews automatically — every year or every month, whichever you chose — until you cancel it. Cancel before the next renewal date in the store where you subscribed:
- iPhone or iPad: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Yo Bro.
- Android: Google Play → your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Yo Bro.
The paid parts stay unlocked until the end of the period you paid for. After that they lock again, but nothing is deleted: your lists stay on your phone. Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription.

Are my lists backed up?
Not by us. Your lists live only on your phone: there is no account and no copy on a server. If you delete the app without saving a file first, the lists go with it.
To keep everything, or move it to a new phone: Settings has Save everything to a file, which puts your lists, how far along every word is and your badges into one file, and Put a file back, which brings them onto the new phone. One list can also go by QR code, or print it: the printed sheet has a code that scans the whole list back in.
Do I get a warning before a test?
If you switch it on. Give a list the date of its test, then turn on Remind me before a test in Settings. The app says so the evening before, once. It never sends any other notification, and it does not ask your phone for permission until you move that switch.
How do I tell whether it is working?
The menu at the top right has How is it going?: the last seven days, where the words stand across the five boxes, which words keep going wrong, and when each list was last practised. Written for the parent, not the child.
My child can barely read yet. Is there anything for them?
Yes, two things. Reading has a course for children starting to read: a few new letters a lesson, a short story with pictures that the phone reads aloud, and questions about it. All of it is free.
And Pictures: a drawing with its word, 354 of them in fourteen sets, or sorted by how hard the word is to read. You choose the language and the pictures, and the app asks them seven ways — from "which word goes with this" to laying the letters out in order. The first time it asks whether you want capitals or small letters.
Is there grammar too?
Yes, under Grammar. Verbs has 150 verbs in every tense school teaches as tables, and the most common in sentence lessons for each tense, with a test and a mark. Language rules has the rules school tests, such as there, their and they're, a or an, and word building.
Vocabulary has school words and what they mean; practise another language's, and your own word is shown under each one. The first lessons of each are free.
What is Maths, and is it really free?
It is the last part of the menu, and yes: all of it is free, and none of it sits behind Yo Bro Pro. Six topics — fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, negative numbers and basic algebra — each a learning path, thirty-three chapters in all.
Every chapter starts by working an example step by step, with a drawing that shows why the method works, and then a practice round where you set your answer on number wheels and a hint gives the next step rather than the answer. A test has no hints and shows the results at the end, with every question worked through. A wrong answer is told why it was wrong, and gets a second go.
Why does the app ask me a sum?
That is the parental gate. Before a purchase or anything that leaves the app — a link to a website, sending a sheet by mail — Yo Bro asks for a grown-up. The question is a multiplication written out in words, and a wrong answer gets a new one. There is no way to switch it off.
Can my child subscribe without asking?
Not if you set it up that way. With Ask to Buy (part of Apple’s Family Sharing) or Google Family Link, a parent has to approve the subscription first. The app waits, and unlocks by itself as soon as you approve.
